Great Power Rivalries in the Aftermath of a Global Pandemic

Zoom sur Kori Schake, Directrice des études de politique étrangère et de défense, American Enterprise Institute. « Rivalités des grandes puissances à l’ère d’une pandémie mondiale”
The question of a shifting international order–especially regarding rising China and its significance for existing hegemonic rivalries and global governance predated the Covid-19 crisis. Yet the pandemic’s ramifications and the ways in which governments have cooperated, competed, and managed the outbreak provide a lens through which to analyze ongoing global geopolitical rivalry and reality.
How should we compare crisis management within and between liberal democracies with that of authoritarian China? What trends within the current international order will the crisis accelerate or accentuate? How should Europe understand and approach both the US and China and position itself regarding these two powers? How should we integrate lessons learned from the Covid-19 crisis into a broader understanding of international security and cooperation?
Kori Schake est directrice de la politique étrangère et de défense à l’American Enterprise Institute.
